Unknown Horizons News: Status Update

Hello everyone,
sorry for the long downtime of the website and the other services. Over the weekend we had some hardware problems with the server.  spq fixed that and now everything runs fine again, thanks mate.

Status update:
It's time for a short status update. The release has been out for about 2 weeks now and we have been busy working out some of the major faws.

What's new:

  • Kaschte finished the first version of the ship builder and the hunters hut. You can build them ingame, functionality is soon to be implemented.
  • Kaschte also made a second model for the inhabitants tents.
  • Keyword inhabitants: they are now available in a further variation. We now have two male and two female inhabitants.
  • Building speed has been improved, lumberjack preview is now almost lagfree.
  • Loading speed has been improved.
  • Major bug that caused the game to crash was fixed.
  • Tearing buildings no longer crashes the game.
  • All exceptions when ending a session have been taken care of.

Building for hunter and boat builder.

Community:

As we would like to bring some life into our community, we have created a bunch of new threads at the forums:

  • Feature Wishlist allowing you to tell us what you would like to see in the next release.
  • Find a slogen -> We are currently looking for a catchy slogan for unknown horizons, tell us your ideas.
  • There will be new threads regularly containig a short summary of things that have been discussed on irc (feel free to join us), so that these topics can be discussed an no decisions are lost.

We are looking forward to seeing you posting on the boards!

Welcome to the team
We would like to welcome KampfKarotte to our team, he will be taking care of the forums and community. Welcome aboard!

That was it for today's short update.

Unknown Horizons News: Unknown Horizons Release 2009.0

We are proud to present Unknown Horizons release 2009.0.  This is not a stable version, its purpose is to give interested players and developers a chance to try the game out.

What's new?
We have made many improvements to the previous release, OpenAnno 2008.1 (starting with the name!).  Some of the other changes are:

  • There are new tile graphics.
  • There's a main square, where people can get their resources.
  • We added lots of new trees.
  • A free trader who will buy and sell your resources has been added.
  • Buildings can now be seen in preview before they are placed.
  • We revamped the building graphics.
  • We added voice-overs for a few important events, and a new song.

For a full list of changes see the changelog or, for even more detail, the list of commits to the svn repository in the Trac Timeline.

Known bugs:

  • In the building preview the graphics are not centred, and sometimes you might not be able to see the whole building.
  • The game sometimes crashes when laying out streets.
  • There's a bug in FIFE that periodically gives failed assertion errors.
  • We're working on resolving these in a future release. For a full list of all known problems visit the Trac Milestone 2009.0.

If you happen to find a new bug (which is quite possible in this development release), please create a ticket at Trac or write an email including:
* the full error message
* a detailed description of what you were doing when the bug occurred.
The more detailed your ticket is, the easier it will be for us to find and fix the bug.

The Future:
From now on we will be offering monthly svn snapshots, rather than a major release every six months. Stable releases will be made every few months, whenever we feel we have something ready. We hope this will help to get more people interested in the project. New contributors are welcome.

Download links:
Check the Downloads Page.

Contest:
We would love to see your biggest city. Check this thread in the forums to participate.

Newsfeed:
As you may have noticed we had some problems with our RSS newsfeed.  The problem should be fixed now. Please readd our feed to your newsreader to make sure everything works properly.

We hope you enjoy trying out this release. We would appreciate it if you would share any feedback or criticism you have either by joining our IRC channel, or by contributing to a discussion in our forums.

Enjoy,
Team Unknown Horizons

Unknown Horizons News: Something changed

Hello everyone,
As you may have noticed something about our project has changed. If you haven't, here's the solution: We have a new name!

We decided to leave the name OpenAnno behind us because it was to often associated with the creation of a "Anno" Clone of the original Anno series of Sunflowers, which we do not want to be.  Of course there are similiarities but we use a lot of our own ideas, too.

So if you find anything in the wiki or some public part of our page that uses the old name,  feel free to update it to our new name:

Unknown Horizons

Also we revamped our logo. Great work kaschte!

Any comments are appreciated!

So long,
Nightraven

Unknown Horizons News: Positional Sounds and more

Helle everyone,
Welcome to a new (small) OpenAnno status update. Here we go:

Positional Sounds
We have been working on implementing the positional audio featuers that FIFE brings with it out of the box. Work is mostly done and it's a pretty nice feature, as sounds can be tied to buildings or ships and depending on there position on the screen, the sound will be more or less loud. We have begun filling the game with sounds for the buildings we have, but some are yet missing (Fisher, church, tents, weaver). If you happen to find/have any sounds that are licensed under an OpenSource license, feel free to visit us on irc (#openanno @ irc.freenode.net).

Code Tutorials
I started writing a small "in-code" tutorial that will hopefully take you through the most important classes in OpenAnno.  I also started documenting the database files some more. So if you are interested in getting started with programming on OpenAnno take a look here: Programmer's Guide.

Next Release
There are rumors we will be having the next official release in the coming weeks. More information coming up, stay tuned.

The old Guys
I'd like to welcome lynxis and totycro back to active development. Both had been busy for quite some time, but are now back to contribute some work to OpenAnno. Great to have you back!

That was it for today's newsflash, stay tuned for more.

So long,
Nihathrael

Unknown Horizons News: Status Update

Hi there,

it's time for another status update as the working progress on OpenAnno is going on straight forward.

Bigger graphics

We started increasing all images to the double size and the buildings are finished yet. Also a new tileset, optimized for the bigger grid and with a much finer look is in development. Ships, trails and units need development work too. Take a look at the new graphics at the SVN-Version.

Free trader

The Free Trading Guild has approved a contract with OpenAnno. From now on they will sail our worlds and supply your settlements with goods. If you trade well and fair, your settlements will raise up far beyond your greatest thoughts.

Redesign of the Build menu

Kaschte started working on a redesign of a simple pre-beta build menu wich will give you more overview and no placeholders for all the buildings and elements anymore.

Overworked Lumberjack

If you build a Lumberjack there will now be build different types of trees in his working area. These trees will be positioned randomly.

Lumberjack

Speech and co

For the first time ever in OpenAnno we got event based speech output. So if you found a new settlement you will get the appropiate notification via a speech snippet. Also Nihathrael checked in a patch, which implements the first ambient sheep sounds for our herder. Further sounds of birds, church bells, the ocean foaming on the beach and so on will be implemented soon.

Localization

Christoph started basic work on Gettext support. For those of us that don't understand this tech stuff: It means if his work will be going on successfully we will soon be able to translate OpenAnno to various languages.

Unknown Horizons News: Happy new year 2009!

Hi folks,

This is my first blog entry on this page. If you don't know me: I am the gamedesigner of OpenAnno. I want to give you a small status update wich tells you what we have done since Christmas. The most important innovation is that we have started coding the free trader. The ship could drive around a little for now, but we are working hard to release a new stable release in january or february including a simple free trader. We'd also fixed a few small bugs in the code.

We've got news from our sound section, too. From our next release on, we'll have a background voice in english and german. The speaker has recorded a few sound samples. You can find them in our branch reposity.

There are also news for our Linux fans! From now on you can get OpenAnno via your Debian installer. Visit our download section for further information. But attention: The release you can find there is a latest build. It's not the official 2008.01 release!

Ok, that's it for today and for 2008. But one important thing left. The whole team wishes you a happy new year 2009! Revisit our website soon.

So long,
André

Unknown Horizons News: Merry Christmas

The OpenAnno Team wishes all visitors happy christmas days.

A little Status Update

Also we are proud to announce that another musician has found the way to us. The first great arrangement of him you can find here in our music section. It's "Beware the Ship's Kobold!" by Tobias Escher. Additional to this Nihathrael and kaschte worked hard to serve you random trees. So that when you build a lumberjacks hut in the future there will be different types of trees coming with it. Check out this new feature by downloading the latest SVN snapshot.

With best wishes Nightraven and the whole team!

OpenAnno News: RSS-Feed is here + Some OpenAnno News

Hello everyone, Welcome to a new OpenAnno newsflash. Unknown Horizons News: RSS-Feed is here + Some OpenAnno News

Hello everyone,
Welcome to a new OpenAnno newsflash.

Let's get to the important things first:
As you may have noticed, we did not have a global RSS-feed on our new website when we launched it, this has been fixed and you can now bookmark our feed here. The old feed url has been forwarded to the new one, but we would like to remind everyone to update, as the redirect might be removed in future.

Now to the fun part:
Work on OpenAnno has been a litte slow the past few weeks, due to most developers having a lot of university stress. We hope to be getting some work done in the holidays and to complete the following features:

  • Random tree graphics on build (mostly done, we only need new graphics).
  • A free trader that sells and buys the players goods.
  • A boatyard, so the player can build new ships and preferably a fishersboat.

We have also been in contact with some great sound guys, who hope to contribute some speach samples and music to the project. So we are very looking forward to that.

Despite the small amount of time that was available during the last weeks, we managed to fix some bugs and redesign the storage handling, allowing us for a more flexibel storage handling of ships. They don't use slots anymore, only have a maximum storage,  so you can choose how to divide your goods. For example you might have a limit of 200 tons, originally you had 4 slots of 50tons to use,  now you could also have 60 tons of wool, 121 tons of wood and 19tons of food if you like.

Finally I'd like to thank everyone involved in making the new homepage, you really did a great job! I'd also like to thank everyone for the positive feedback we got, it's a great motivation :-).

That was it for today's news. Stay tuned for more and visit us on irc: #openanno@irc.freenode.net. Have a nice christmas time!

So long,
Nihathrael

Unknown Horizons News: Welcome on our new website.

We warmly welcome you on our new Website. We now have a new design, structural layout and are even more user friendly.

The new Website is primarily oriented towards the end-user that first want to do one thing: Play the game. We kept this aspect in mind during the whole development process, took usability in the foreground and the technical stuff in the background. But no doubt about, it is still in there.

The biggest point to notice is the new design. We threw out all the wiki pages and placed everything important on this seamless new website. Here you will find all information about OpenAnno and the development process.

Also our new forum opened its doors. We hope to see you there, sharing your ideas and thoughts about OpenAnno with us.

Now, start exploring and tell us what you think about the new website. Constructive feedback is always welcome.
